I am not defending the Florida shooter in the least, but I am questioning how to best improve the moral fiber of our children.
People want to blame someone or something for the behavior of this man. Guns, knives, bombs, rocks do not inspire one person to kill another. It is the lack of moral values. So! Where, as a society, did we fail to instill these values in this man?
In my time, the older students carried loaded guns to high school in the gun rack of their truck and in plain sight, and most didn't even lock the vehicle. Nothing ever happened and nothing was ever stolen because we had a fair set of morals.
I'm not saying we were angels. It has only been in the last 30+ years that we have started having mass shootings. Most of the mass shootings at schools and churches have been committed by kids/young adults below the age of 24, who have fallen through that moral gap.
What has changed in our kids and parents in the last 30+ years? You can't blame guns. They haven't really changed that much. They are still inanimate objects. If you have ever driven a school bus, you can see the changes in the kids up close. Too many have no respect for anyone, or others property. They take no responsibility for their actions. It is always the fault of someone else. It is all about "me, me, me and what 'I' want." If you have something I want, I'll steal it because "I" want it.
Our Constitution is based on the morals listed in the 10 Commandments of the Bible. But, we can't teach our 'religious' values/morals in public schools because they may 'offend' someone who does not share our moral values. What we CAN DO is teach the Constitution and Bill of Rights as well as those laws which protect our Rights and how they are applied to all. It is now time we put those 'moral values' in the classroom and hold our congress responsible for getting it done.
Now the congress wants to punish the entire country over the failings of a few individuals, all morally corrupt. I do not favor mass censorship or mass punishment to correct the failings of a few. I favor getting to the heart of the issue and fixing it.
If one of mine were one of the 17 who were killed, I would rake up all the anger and frustration I have accumulated over my 70+ years, feed it to my congressman until it is fixed, and not blame the country for the failings of a few.
